The exhibition “Sejbiet Missirijietna 1913 – 1963 – 2013” was officially opened on Friday 20th September by Hon Dr Jose’ Herrera, Parliamentary Secretary for Culture and Local Government.
This is the third exhibition organised by Wirt iż-Żejtun for the festivities of Żejt iż-Żejtun. This exhibition gathers the relics of our ancestors found in a number of tombs pertaining to the Classical Period discovered 100 years and 50 years ago.
The first series of tombs were discovered in 1913 when the sewerage system was being introduced along the streets forming the area right behind the parish church of Zejtun. Houses in this area were being built on a grid-iron street pattern in the beginning of the 20th century. A second group of tombs were discovered when the new girls secondary school was being built in the 1960s. The construction of this school also led to the discovery of the Zejtun Roman Villa.
This year’s exhibition is being hosted at the HSBC branch at Zejtun which is located at Vjal il-25 ta’ Novembru, right at the entrance to the centre of Zejtun. This venue was made available upon the initiative of the branch workers who also offered their personal time towards our aim. The archaeological artifacts being displayed form part of the National Collection and have been given to us on loan by Heritage Malta.
The exhibition is opened during the official bank hours and will also open on Saturday the 28th September between 17:00 and 00:00.
