This evening Wirt iż-Żejtun Executive Committee attended to the sitting of the Environment and Planning Parliamentary Committee which was called to discuss the proposal for the extension of Buleben Industrial Estate following a motion presented by Hon Dr Godfrey Farrugia.
The Malta Industrial Parks CEO, Mr Karl Azzopardi gave an explanation as to why such extension is required, highlighting the fact that MIP has a number of requests by industries to open new factories. He also remarked that following a re-assessment done by MIP the area needed at Buleben will be quarter the size of the area delineated by the South Malta Local Plan, amounting to 37,000 sqr m.
Perit Ruben Abela, President of Wirt iż-Żejtun, whilst insisting on the proactive approach adopted by the NGO on this case, in line with its mission statement, explained through a power point presentation all the social assets which this area posses. He thanked MIP for coming up with this proposal as this presented a challenging research exercise for Wirt iż-Żejtun leading to the discovery of various historical assets which otherwise would have been left unexplored.
The message by Wirt iż-Żejtun was clear. The delineation done in the South Malta Local Plan for possible industrial expansion was in direct conflict with other conservation policies in the same plan. Today the studies carried out by Wirt iż-Żejtun give more insight to the real social values of this land and the only way forward is to declare the whole area as outside development zone (ODZ).

A huge well done has to be stated as emphatically as possible for the unstinting efforts of WIZ in protecting Zejtun’s green belt and its immensely rich archaeological, historical, cultural, social and environmental fabric. We are truly indebted to our superb NGO for its comprehensive approach and thorough case in order to ensure the preservation of unique Zejtun’s identity, its agricultural wealth and the incredible importance that it is defended at all costs.
