EVENTS: A Heritage Trail around the centre of iż-Żejtun

DSCN7725COn Sunday 26th April 2015, Wirt iż-Żejtun organised a heritage trail around the centre of iż-Żejtun.  The tour started at Misraħ Carlo Diacono where those present were introduced to the urban development of this town through different ages.  Information was also given on a number of historic buildings located within this square.

The tour then proceeded towards il-Gwiedi and Triq Santa Katarina where along the route participants enjoyed the splendor of local domestic Baroque Architecture along the narrow and intricate streets of the towncentre.  We visited the  neo-classical Government Primary School and next to it one of the first schools ever built in Malta dating back to the early 19th Century.

The trail included also a visit to the Beland Band Club Music Archives and the architectural gem of the building in which this band club is located.  This was followed up by a guided visit to the Baroque Parish Church of St Catherine, whereby those present were taken around the altarpieces by Local Artist and Paintings Restorer Mr Anthony Spagnol.  This was followed by a  guided tour into the recently refurbished Parish Arts and History Museum.

Once out from the church, the tour proceeded towards the main square where we visited the Pandora Theatre, a local cinema which was built in the 1950s and forming part of the Zejtun Band Club premises.
