Yesterday evening Wirt iż-Żejtun held a very interesting event at the Oratory of the Blessed Sacrament next to the main parish church at Zejtun. This activity was literally a flash back into the past.
Journalist Fiona Vella interviewed Dr Alexander Cachia Zammit about his memories of the past celebrations of the Holy week at Zejtun in front of a wide ear openned audiance. This was a unique experience of gathering history and ethnographic information through oral documentation. In fact Wirt iż-Żejtun documented this interview through audio and video recording and in the future will be posting extracts from it on this website.
Amongst the interesting facts which came out throught he interview were the storage of the Holy Passion statues in chapels and houses around the village; the way how Our Lady of Sorrows procession held a week before Good Friday was introduced in Zejtun; the past liturgical celebrations in the church during the Holy Week which are no longer held; and the way the general public was involved in these celebrations, besides a wealth of other facts.
During the interview a series of old photographic images portraying the Good Friday procession and other activities held during the Holy Week were projected. These images were made available to Wirt iż-Żejtun thanks to Mr Carmel P Baldacchino.
This activity was dedicated to the memory of Peter Buttigieg, a veteran entusiast and organiser of the Good Friday Procession, who left us on the 27th February 2011.
