On Sunday 26th April, Wirt iż-Żejtun will be organising a heritage trail around the centre of iż-Żejtun. We will be meeting at o9:15 next to the New Wave kiosk in Misraħ Carlo Diacono where those present will be introduced to the urban development of this town through different ages. Information will also be given on a number of historic buildings located within this square.
The tour will then proceed towards il-Gwiedi and Triq Santa Katarina where along the route participants will enjoy the splendor of local domestic Baroque Architecture along the narrow and intricate streets of the towncentre. We will also be visiting the neo-classical Government Primary School and next to it one of the first schools ever built in Malta dating back to the early 19th Century.
The trail includes also a visit to the Beland Band Club Music Archives and the architectural gem of the building in which this band club is located. This is followed up by a guided visit to the Baroque Parish Church of St Catherine, whereby those present will be taken around the altarpieces by Local Artist and Paintings Restorer Mr Anthony Spagnol. Mr Spagnol will also be guiding us into the recently refurbished Parish Arts and History Museum.
Once out from the church, the tour will proceed towards the main square where we will be visiting the Pandora Theatre, a local cinema which was built in the 1950s and forming part of the Zejtun Band Club premises. The tour will end by noon at the point from where it starts.
There is a fee of €5 per person for this cultural tour, which includes the entrance ticket for the Parish Museum. Children under 12 years will attend free of charge. The event will be held in Maltese.
